Community Nutrition
Course description: "This course is a discussion of the principles and programs developed to improve the dietary intake and the nutritional status of individuals and groups within a community. primary topics include: government and nongovernment nutrition-related programs, groups at nutritional risk, nutritional issues/concerns across the lifecycle, and an introduction to developing community-based nutrition intervention programs (needs assessment, intervention, and evaluation). Didactic lectures and guest presentations accompanied with an in-depth needs assessment and intervention project and a community service-learning component will provide students the opportunity to integrate and apply knowledge through a hands-on approach."

As described above, students were tasked to conduct a needs assessment for a community of choice. I chose to conduct mine in Ward 7, Washington D.C. and my topic was food insecurity. The button above includes the full needs assessment. Then we were asked to make a 1-pager with a solution for our identified issue in the communities we had researched and present it to the class, which can also be found above.
I was fortunate enough to get my number one placement choice for the service-learning part of this course at Mott Children's Hospital at the University of Michigan Hospital. I extended my semester-long placement, to work with RD Megan Brown. My projects can be found under the Mott CHildren's Hospital button on the Nutrition/Dietetics page.
